Elimination Diets: The Gold Standard for Food Sensitivities?

Have you ever gone through the rigor of an elimination diet to see if there are foods in your diet that are causing unpleasant symptoms? Many of us have, or at least I thought. Classic elimination diet remains the gold standard for the detection of food sensitivity. It was invented and popularized by Dr. Albert Rowe in his book elimination diets and allergies of the patient, written in 1941.'re Still using the concept to date. Many health professionals, including doctors recommend regular diets.

So what exactly causes elimination diet? As aptly named, this type of diet aims to eliminate the most common allergens that are known (or should be more appropriately called, sensitivities) diet for a period of time, usually 3 to 4 weeks. This gives the immune system enough time to calm down, so to speak, and long enough to see a reduction in symptoms at all. When reintroducing foods that cause symptoms are usually obvious and more serious than previously known. This makes it much easier to identify offending foods.

These are foods that normally disposed of in a basic plan for disposal:

As you can imagine, these plans are clearly a walk in the park. In general, they are recommended for patients who are willing and able to follow the protocol to the strong suggestion that the plan will be guided by a qualified professional. The rigor of the diet can be a barrier for some, but this can be overcome with a good education, advice and support. Most of us dietitians have received training and practice for our education and are well qualified to walk patients through the process.

As you now know that elimination diets have been around for a while, you've probably noticed that they began to be re-popularized in recent times, almost whimsical in nature. Today, it seems that there are countless books on the shelves that reach to talk about plans for anti-inflammatory diet and specialized food plans that say they will help you lose weight, increase your energy, and even make you look years Young. What all these systems have in common? They are based on the classic elimination diet!

As noted above, these schemes may be moderately or very narrow and restrictive on the basis of what criteria are followed. This approach is generally decided by you and your doctor and food seem to think probably a problem in your case. Well guided, informed and well-intentioned, is essentially a guessing game. Similarly, when you follow the plan published by an author who has never met and certainly do not know your history or symptoms, is a major guessing game.

And there you have the number one problem of our "gold standard". How in the world to know what to remove and what to leave? Why recommend anyone ever get apples, for example, or quinoa, and other "healthy" foods that could be equally problematic. If you're one of the lucky few that responds to one or two common allergens, then this system works well for you. Problem solved! I met these people and the elimination diet was a miracle. For others, however, ends up being just another plan that did not work. Obviously, elimination diets can be helpful, but are not the answer for everyone. I know firsthand, because elimination diets never worked for me.

As mentioned earlier, there are several authors and experts now recommend different elimination diets that plan miracle cure for their ailments and help you lose stubborn weight. Even Dr. Oz has a plan for elimination diet! Knowing what you know now, you can immediately determine that this may be true for a small group. For many, these plans will not solve all problems and food just spend money on another book or waste weeks of work for little reward.

All that said, I think the elimination diets have their place. I had clients who could not or did not want to spend money on blood tests for food sensitivity (the only one I recommend is Mediator Tests published by Oxford Biomedical) and I found a phase plan successful diet that worked for them. It is the minority, however. We imagine and won. This does not always happen. Most customers who have already tried everything that usually come to discover, through blood tests, no one imagined they react to random healthy foods (ie, fruits, vegetables, grains, gluten, etc.) , so they have been forgotten. This is where the elimination diets have their limitations and know that the right to use blood test is crucial.

The best use of an elimination diet is a qualified medical professional, especially one who knows the history of health and can help design the best diet. A book, a television or an online guide is not the way to go. Of course, these avenues have obviously helped some, but a suitable care is the best choice, especially for those with more severe and chronic conditions.
