Can Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome (PCOS) Cause Depression?

Many women with PCOS often have depression, anxiety and other mood related disorders . A question that often arises is whether depression and anxiety are the result of having symptoms of PCOS or are caused by a hormonal imbalance associated with PCOS.
A study at the University of Chicago Department of Medicine at the free testosterone levels slightly elevated linked Hospital (FT) with higher rates of mood disorders . The study included 27 women with PCOS and high levels of FT and 27 women without PCOS and normal ranges FT levels .
The results of the study show that women with slightly elevated levels of FT were more likely to be depressed than women with normal or elevated levels of FT . This finding is interesting because it showed how FT can have a negative effect on mood slightly elevated levels, but did not have much effect on the extremely high levels. One idea was that women with extremely high levels of FT are accustomed to high levels and their body adapts accordingly. ( 1 )
The study advises physicians to consider that depression can be a symptom of a hormonal imbalance in women with PCOS . Treatments to treat the cause of the syndrome levels and hormone balance polycystic ovaries may help many women to relieve depression and anxiety, and other symptoms of PCOS , which can range from infertility and excess facial hair for skin conditions like acne and brown spots and male pattern baldness.
