What Does the Word "Natural" in Natural Food Really Mean?

As consumers, we have come to believe that foods labeled "natural" are safe and healthy. We have come to see them as, good nutritious food choices that are healthy for us to eat. The reality is very different from the perception. Who has control over the disclosure in this case, that the "natural" food really means and what consumers think it means?

The Food and Drug Administration has jurisdiction over food labeling. Currently there is no regulation or control of what is "natural" food. The FDA has enough of what can be called "natural" in the world of the definition of food, allowing food manufacturers to deceive consumers into thinking they are making healthy choices when choosing foods labeled "natural."

The reality is that "natural" can mean anything. Natural foods can be processed real foods that contain natural ingredients that have been converted into artificial ingredients. Natural foods may contain derivatives of plants that were grown from genetically modified seeds that were treated with unpleasant things such as pesticides and treated with synthetic chemical solvents ingredients.

Meat and poultry (including eggs) labeled "natural" can come from animals that have been fed GM corn and soy, antibiotics and other medications, given the artificial growth hormones, and are kept in rooms confined factory farm. This confinement increases the stress in animals and produce cortisol increased in meat. Cortisol increases the inflammation in the body which promotes premature aging and disease levels; these higher levels of cortisol are passed on to you when you eat this meat and poultry.

Consumers believe that "natural" should mean something very different and should be a period where they can trust decisions on food to buy are made. According to the results of a survey of consumers by the National Research Center Consumer Reports, American consumers believe that "natural" label on food means that they can be confident that no chemicals were used in the process, they have not used toxic pesticides, no artificial colors or ingredients used, and used without GMOs. The buying public also think that this means in regard to meat and poultry, the animal was not given hormones or antibiotics for growth and other drugs, and that his power does not contain genetically modified organisms and artificial ingredients.

The consuming public is mistaken for profit, unlike the "organic" label is regulated and monitored by the Department of Agriculture of the United States, there are no restrictions on how the animals were raised or what you can get in foods labeled "natural."

Too many people believe that they avoid toxic pesticides, artificial growth hormones and GMOs when they buy labeled "natural" foods. True and useful labels should not confuse the consumer report.

For you, protect you as a consumer should call the USDA and the Food and Drug Administration to stop allowing food manufacturers use the term "natural" in labeling their products. It is misleading and allows them to deceive the public into thinking they are making healthy food choices when they are not!

We need transparency and truth in our food labeling, no confusion and deception. Calls to government agencies that are supposed to protect you do just that!
